Lord Derby Khaki Enlistment Armlet
In October 1915 Lord Derby was appointed Director General of recruiting with the main aim of getting all men aged 18 to 41 to enlisted in Kitchener's New Armies.
Men who were not exempt from military service were expected to come forward and enlisted for military service and in so doing so were issued with this Khaki Armlet which they would wear on there civilian clothes to show they had enlisted.
It was still worn when he joined the army as there was such a shortage of military uniform that for months men might have to train in the civilian clothes.
Each Armlet was stamped the by Army Council and an issue number so the armlet could be traced to see if the man was the real owner and not trying to miss joining up .
