This is a high level award for exceptional service in battle.
The war merit was awarded in several different levels and you had to be awarded the lower levels before you could earn the next level. So to be awarded the Merit cross with swords in the Knights Cross version you would have to have been awarded the War merit second class and the first class first.
The merit cross was awarded with and without swords, the swords version was for combat the non sword version was for non combat or civilian use.
This quality award is made of metal, is highly detailed and comes in an un-issued finish.
The cross has crossed swords and 1939 on the back, includes a 24 cm length of ribbon.
