Model 1931 Early War Bread Bag by Richard Underwood Militaria.

Brotheutel 31 or bread bag was issued to every soldier in the German Army, you can find lots of variations of the bag during the war, due to fabrics available and the manufacturer of the bag. There are a few main changes that where made during which can help with a rough time period of when the bread bag was used, these include leather reinforcement on the belt loops and D rings on the back of the bag.

The bread bag was designed to carry the soldier’s daily rations, including the bread where it gets it name, esbit cooker and cutlery set. The soldier would also carry allsorts of other things in the bread bag like cleaning kits.

This early war model bread bag features:

  • Black leather reinforcement panels on the belt loops these where removed from later models.
  • Belt loops are secured by metal buttons.
  • Metal belt hook stitched onto a strap between the belt loops.
  • 2 Grey painted metal D shaped rings on the front to attach the water bottle to.
  • 2 Grey painted metal D shaped rings on the back to attach the carrying shoulder strap to. Shoulder strap not included.
  • All 4 D rings are fixed onto the bag by black leather tabs.
  • The flap is fastened on the inside by two buttons and black leather straps.
  • The one compartment is also secured by a black leather strap and button.
