M1850 Percussion Cap Pouch with Early Shield Design
M1850 Cap pouch this is the early pattern of pouch that was made before the American Civil War and saw widespread use by both North and South Armies in the early years of the war.
The pouch held percussion caps for any of the rifles or pistols that required a percussion cap to fire, there where not different percussion cap pouches for different weapons.
Our replica of the Model 1850 percussion cap pouch has the following features:
- Black leather with white stitching.
- One compartment with a wool liner.
- Double flap design to help keep the weather out and the caps dry.
- Second flap, the outer main flap is a shield design which has a leather tab sewn onto the flap and then the tab fastened onto a brass stud on the bottom of the pouch.
- Two belt loops are stitched and riveted on.
This earlier cap pouch is often called the shield design cap pouch and although it was stopped production by most factories when the simplified M1861 cap pouch was designed, several factories carried on making this M1850 cap pouch so it can be seen being used throughout the American Civil War by both the Union and Confederate armies.
