During the Vietnam war the US Army changed the way the information was printed on the dog tags several times, this is the early war style of printing the GI Dog Tags.

These US Dog Tags are the post WW2 ones which do not have the notch cut out in them.

The information and the layout of the US ID Dog Tags up to 1967 where as follows:

  • Line 1. Last name only.
  • Line 2. First name followed by middle name initial.
  • Line 3. Service pre-fix and Army service number.
  • Line 4. Blood type.
  • Line 5. Religious preference.

Religion, on Vietnam era dog tags, was stamped out in full unlike WW2 era tags where the religion was abbreviated. So you had Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist etc. if you had no religious preference the tags are stamped NO PREFERENCE or are left blank.
