Dads Army ARP Warden Hodges Civilian Suit badge set

When the warden was not on active duty in his ARP Overalls, he would wear this ARP badge in his suit jacket buttonhole with his whistle and arm band in his pocket. When the Air Raid is sounded the ARP warden would slide on his Arm Band to say he was on Duty and his whistle is blown if he needs to attach the attention of public in danger.

Warden Hodges played by Bill Pertwee when at his Greengrocers in Walmington-on-Sea wears the Buttonhole badge in his suit jacket and is seen many times in the TV series Dads Army wearing the white arm Band, blowing his whistle.

History Information

When air raids are threatened, warning will be given in towns by sirens or hooters, which will be sounded, in some places by short blasts, and in other places by a warbling note, changing every few seconds. In war, sirens and hooters will not be used for any other purpose than this.

The warning may also be given by the Police or Air Raid Wardens blowing short blasts on whistles.
When you hear the warning, take cover at once.

In 1941 it was decided that short blasts on a whistle would indicate to the public the fall of incendiary devices. This change led to a further distribution of whistles to all reserve members of the wardens' service. Long blasts on the whistle were to reinforce an imminent air raid
