M1860 Enfield Cartridge Box for the 1853 Enfield Musket

Enfield cartridge box pouch.

This is a replica of the cartridge box that was introduced by the British army in 1859/1860 so it is sometimes called the M1859/M1860 cartridge box.

This pouch was designed to hold fifty rounds of reserve ammunition. The box has a tin insert which is divided into 5 sections, each section holds wrapped packet of 10 paper cartridges (so the pouch holds 50 cartridges in total) for the .577 calibre Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket.

The 50 round cartridge box was suspended from a sling to the rear of the right hip.

  • Double flap closure to help protect the cartridges.
  • Outer flap is secured with a white leather tab and brass stud on the bottom.
  • Tin insert which is split into 5 sections.
  • 2 black buckles on the bottom and 2 loops on the back for the sling to attach to (sling not included).
  • The sling was black leather for British rifle regiments and volunteers while the British line Infantry wore a white buff leather strap.
  • Measures 12cm high 18.7cm wide 8.5cm deep.

The Enfield pouch was worn with a sling which was black leather for British rifle regiments and volunteers while the British line Infantry wore a white buff leather strap.

These pouches where also purchased by the Americans, both Union and Confederate, to be used with their M1853 2 and 3 band Enfield muskets.
