Grossdeutschland Regiment formed in early 1939. This was the elite Heer (Army) Infantry regiment and unlike other regiments drew recruits from the whole of Germany. During the war they expanded to a division in 1942 and finally to a Panzer grenadier Division equipped with Panzers, Panthers and armoured cars.
