The New Haven Repeating Arms Co. had first designed and produced the Henry rifle, the Model 1866 was the first rifle to bear the name Winchester on it. The Model 1866 Winchester under lever rifle was an improved designed over the Henry, one of the improvements was the side opening gate to load the rifle and a front wood fore grip. Internally the Model 1866 featured a two pronged firing pin that struck the rim fire cartridge in two spots which gave a positive ignition.

The original Winchester rifle- the Winchester Model 1866- was famous for its rugged construction and lever-action mechanism that allowed the rifleman to fire a number of shots before having to reload: hence the term, "repeating rifle. The Model 1866 was nicknamed the "Yellow Boy" because of its "brass" receiver (actually a bronze alloy called gunmetal).

The Model 1866 was made in many variations in barrel length, there where long rifles and shorter carbines which where more suited for horseman and cowboys. This is the carbine version.

Denix code: 1140/L.
