The M44 mountain rucksack was modified from the earlier Model 1931 mountain Rucksack 

The M44 was designed to replace the Tornister 39 model pack and due to its large capacity and practicality is became part of the general marching order from all ground soldiers from 1944 onwards, it can be carried either attached to the Y straps, or carried as a rucksack with the extra shoulder straps supplied.

The pack features an internal cotton  pocket to carry coking pots, cleaning kit and sew kits etc.

M1944 rucksack features include

• 2x  Medium external pockets for rations etc 
• internal cotton pocket 
• Leather side tabs to attach utility straps so blankets or Zeltbahns can be carried
• Drawstring neck closure
• Cotton canvas body
• Black leather straps
• capacity about 40 litres 
• removable adjustable shoulder straps
