The Zulus attacked on the morning of the 22nd of January, the camp was overrun by 2pm, survivors were making there escape and so were Lt Melvill and Lt Coghill who were both mounted and were given the 24th's Queens colours and told to save them from capture.
They rode all the way the Fugitives Drift were they were overwhelmed by Zulus and both died at the Buffalo River trying to save the colours and the honour if the regiment. The Queens Colours amazingly were washed down the river and found weeks latter on the 4th February 1879 by a patrol.
