This British Army Greatcoat but made famous by Dunkirk  it was introduced in June 1939 just in time for the regular units of the BEF British Expeditionary Force to issued them before leaving for France. this model replaced the 1909 single breasted version 

The 1939 great coat can be seen in many of the photographs of the British BEF waiting in line on the Beaches of Dunkirk to be evacuated by the royal Navy. You can also see pictures of the rescued soldiers on trains stations and NAAFI wagons waiting for a cup of tea wearing their 1939 Greatcoat.

The 1939 Greatcoat was double breasted and differed from the 1940 pattern by not having the  rear inverted pleat in the centre of the back plus there were holes to insert the 1/2 belt through into the inside when not being used.
