The wound stripe was suggested by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle after seeing French soldiers wearing Wound stripes on their tunics,

 General Roberts approved this badge so after 14th August 1916 the wound stripe was issued to soldiers who had been wounded in combat and up to 3 wound stripes were worn on the lower left sleeve of the tunic.
