French soldiers were issued with this type of bag to carry in the field all there personal kit like rations, eating utensils spare shirt and clean socks. There were many different colours and types of fabric used by the French army but all followed this basic pattern of a large haversack with no pockets inside and a basic cotton shoulder straps that has a period twin spike buckle.
