The 173rd Airborne, nicknamed the "Sky Soldiers" was the first major ground troops to arrive in Vietnam, they landed in Vietnam on the 5th of May 1965. The 1st Infantry Division, the 101st Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division would all arrive later.
The 173rd Airborne was the only unit that made a combat parachute jump in Vietnam during operation Junction City.
The 173rd Airborne patch can also be seen worn on the tiger stripe shirt worn by Martin Sheen in the film "Apocalypse Now" film.
