The "U.S." letters are worn above the Officers Branch of Service insignia on the collar of the A class dress uniforms, like the WW2 OD 51 or chocolate officers 4 pocket and ike jackets.
These are worn with all Army Officers Branch of Service insignia including the Infantry and Airborne crossed rifle's, Military Police crossed pistols, USAAF wings and propellers and the Cavalry crossed sabres etc.

U.S. letters for an American Officer's tunic collar. The pair of metal US insignia are in a gilt (gold/brass colour) finish.
Badges with the pin back fastener do not sit as flat as the badges with the later clutch back fastener, the pin back sit a little bit away from the tunic giving them a distinctive look.
