WW1 German Imperial mauser bayonet 1898-02 with sawback
This model was introduced in 1898 but modified in 1902 for use with the Mauser rifle 1898. The sawback version was originally issued to pioneer, engineers and some infantry soldiers to cut trees and help build defences.
In the trenches during the first part od WW1 they proved useful in repairing and maintaining trenches. French and British troops were reported to be shooting any soldier caught with a sawback bayonet as they thought they caused inhumane injuries.

So the Imperial German high command ordered all M1898-25 saw back bayonets to be ground down to remove the saw edge which meant that originals are now hard to find.
