When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, Germany sent troops to help Francisco Franco's nationalist forces.
Germany introduced the "Spanish Cross" award on the 14th April 1939 for all those German troops who participated in the Spain. It was worn on the right side of the uniform below the pocket flap.
This Bronze award was awarded for three months of service in Spain.
